A Nation’s Theatre DEvelop Panel Discussion

Derby Theatre in association with Battersea Arts Centre and The Guardian
Friday 24 July 2015

Presented by Derby Theatre in association with Battersea Arts Centre and The Guardian

Two years ago Derby Theatre hosted the first DEparture Lounge Festival which included a panel discussion chaired by Lyn Gardner about artist development in the East Midlands. The festival and this discussion marked a turning point for the theatre and the region. Artists who previously felt uncomfortable about coming through the door of the theatre were suddenly being let in on the conversation and having a say in their local venue, and fresh innovative small scale work was given centre stage for the first time.

Since then artist development in the region has changed dynamically with the establishment of In Good Company supporting associate artists, cultivating a network of engaged local artists and offering affordable professional development. Two years on, we want to revisit this conversation. We want to look at where we’ve come, where we’re going and how we can continue to open our doors to a diverse community of artists. This panel will focus on the East Midlands and the journey it has come on in relation to honest and open artist development.

Panellists: Skinder Hundal (New Art Exchange Nottingham), Trina Haldar (Artist, Leicester), Sarah Brigham (Derby Theatre), Pippa Frith (Independent Producer)
Chair: Lyn Gardner
